A high temperature in children creates concern for their parents. Fever indicates an infection but poses no significant health risks to children in majority of instances. Learning the right methods for managing a fever enables you to make your child feel better while stopping potential problems from occurring.

What is a Fever?

The body triggers a fever when temperature reaches levels above the average range. Children normally have body temperatures that fall between 36.5°C to 37.5°C (97.7°F to 99.5°F). A fever is usually above 38°C (100.4°F).

What Causes Fever?

Fevers are usually caused by:

  • Infections (such as colds, flu, or ear infections)
  • Teething (in babies)
  • Vaccinations
  • Other illnesses

Safe Ways to Treat a Fever

  1. Keep Your Child Hydrated

Your child’s fever-induced dehydration requires fluid replacement through regular consumption of suitable options such as water and clear broth and diluted fruit juices.

  • Water
  • Breast milk (for babies)
  • Clear soups
  • Fruit juices (diluted with water)
  1. Dress Your Child Comfortably

Heavy blankets along with thick clothing should be avoided because they retain body heat.

Let your child wear lightweight clothing materials which allow air to circulate through their clothes.

3. Use a Lukewarm Sponge Bath

A washcloth dipped in lukewarm water is effective for wiping your child’s entire body.

Avoid both cold water and ice baths since they might intensify the fever condition.

  1. Give Fever-Reducing Medicine (If Needed)

You can administer either paracetamol (Acetaminophen) or ibuprofen to your child when they feel uncomfortable or have elevated fever levels.

  • Paracetamol (Acetaminophen) – Safe for children above 2 months old.
  • Ibuprofen – Safe for children above 6 months old.
  • Avoid administering aspirin to kids because this medication can develop into dangerous Reye’s syndrome.

  1. Let Your Child Rest

Your child needs energy to battle infections therefore promote sufficient rest. You should not pressure your child to participate in physical activities.
